KS3 History

From September 2015, students will experience a 2 year, 1 term Key Stage 3. Combined with the changes introduced to GCSE’s, the department decided to overhaul the outline of study, so that the concepts studied during Years 7 and 8 would provide an excellent grounding for those students who opt for History at GCSE. We have also worked hard to ensure that there is a good and exciting range of local, national and international events that are studied.

Due to students experiencing differences in their access to History from the range of primary schools, we start Year 7 with a baseline assessment so we can gauge the skills level of students and use this information to design lessons that will ensure students make expected progress or better. Subsequently, our outline of study is as follows:

The concepts students will study are as follows:

How well are students doing in History?

One of the many changes in education in recent years has been the scrapping of the National Curriculum level, so teachers can better demonstrate progress. Each student in Key Stage 3 will receive regular assessments, with individual assessment specific criteria being used to judge the quality of work produced using an ascending scale of 1-9. This information, combined with professional judgement, will result in parents being provided with a progress grade using the whole school system of Pass 1/2/3, Merit 1/2/3, Distinction 1/2/3.
What follows below illustrates how students skills in the key concepts in history will progress and prepare them for the demands of GCSE:
