School Report 2010

Diss High School News Day

Sixteen year 9 students, along with two year 10 students acting as mentors, have taken part in this year’s BBC School Report News Day on the 11th March.

Students worked in two groups: one creating television news and the other a radio broadcast. Their final work can be viewed on this website. The BBC have a direct link to the students’ work on this site so students really began to feel the pressure about producing work that was to a top class standard.

They then went on to cover stories about the school’s plans for a new weather station and the E-futures campaign. It is hoped that during ‘E-Week’ (22nd – 26th March), Diss High School can reduce their energy consumption by 15%. Students discussed ways in which large organisations such as schools really could cut back their energy consumption with Mr Goude and Councillor Palmer.

Mr Whatley was interviewed about endangered species by students, under the watchful eye of EDP reporter Adam Gretton, who came along to support students with their reports for the morning.

Television News

The television crew started their day by participating in a World Record Attempt in conjunction with the BBC and the MET office to produce the largest ever interactive weather map. Students, under the watchful eye of Councillor Tony Palmer and head of Geography, Mr Goude, took the temperature outside and Miss Johnson quickly sent off the paperwork. Fingers crossed the record attempt will be successful!

Radio News

The radio news group worked really hard, beginning with a story about the school’s E-futures project, talking to Mrs Barr and students about their opinion of this campaign.

Another story covered the problems of Dutch Elm disease and how Diss Junior School are trying to tackle this problem to see if Elm trees have developed a new resistance to this disease.

A tree theme was continued where team leader, Declan, interviewed Mr Whatley about the idea of planting fruit trees around Diss.

Ofsted and their ‘raising the bar’ in standards when grading schools was explored and deputy head, Mrs Barr, was asked her opinion about this change in system.

The sports desk were intrigued as to which sports stars were most recognized by staff and students around school. Interestingly, football players were by far more easily recognized than any other sporting heroes…

Well done to all the students and many thanks to Mr Outred, Miss Parker, Mrs Hubbard, Mr Goude, Mr Young, Mr Glover and all of the English department for all of their support with this exciting day! A special well done to Danielle who was interviewed for National School Report Radio and sounded extremely knowledgeable about the E-Futures project!
