Within Diss High School we have a thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Students are invited to enrol in the Bronze Award towards the end of their Year 9 with a view to starting their training and carrying out their expeditions in Year 10.   As well as our staff monitoring and facilitating the Service, Skills and Physical Recreation parts of the Award, the Bronze students complete at least 6 afterschool training sessions covering topics such as campcraft, first aid, orienteering, outdoor cooking and The Country Code.

The Expedition section is, of course, an extremely enjoyable and  challenging part of this Award.  A Day Hike is completed locally as an introduction to the world of hiking and then, during the summer term, students undertake their Bronze Practice Expedition.  Their Assessed Expedition is held at the start of their Year 11 school year in September.  Both Practice and Assessed expeditions are held within Norfolk.

If successful at the Bronze Level, students can continue on with the award at Silver level in either Year 11 or Year 12.  Skills and knowledge already learnt at the Bronze level are built upon with participants aiming to become more self sufficient and independent whilst undertaking more adventurous hiking in the White Peak area of the Derbyshire Peak District.  Again, after-school training together with a Practice Expedition and an Assessed Expedition is undertaken to achieve this level of Award.

For Year 13 students, The Duke of Edinburgh Staff within Diss High School will be facilitating the Gold Award.  The Service, Skills and Physical Recreation parts of the Award will all be monitored whilst students will be enrolled in Open County Expeditions along with other Norfolk students.
